Xiaomi has made a big name for itself in China selling well-specced Android smartphones like the Mi 4 and Mi Note at affordable prices. Many folks have wondered when Xiaomi might make its way to the U.S., and the company today announced that it’ll do just that soon, but there’s a catch.

Hugo Barra, Vice President at Xiaomi and head of its Global division, revealed today that his company will launch a site “in a few months” that’ll sell products like power banks, headphones, and fitness bands. Unfortunately, the site won’t sell any of Xiaomi’s phones or tablets. Barra explained the decision by saying that localizing its MIUI user interface for Android is “incredibly difficult.” Because of the carrier-centric nature of the U.S., Xiaomi would also probably have to work with some major U.S. operators if it wanted to get its products in front of a lot of consumers.

Xiaomi is known for creating some attractive, well-designed products, and so it’s exciting to see that at least some of its goodies will finally be available in the U.S. Obviously it’s a bit of a bummer that we won’t be able to get Xiaomi’s phones and tablets here, but here’s to hoping that if Xiaomi can manage to gain some recognition in the U.S., the company will end up bringing its mobile hardware here too.
