Google Wallet has been around for quite a while, but it’s never been able to gain much traction with mainstream consumers. Now a new report claims that Google is prepping a new payment service.
A report from The Information claims that Google is currently testing a payment service called “Plaso” that lets Android smartphone users pay at retailers by giving their initials to the cashier. No other details about the service have been revealed.
In addition to Google, Square is said to be working on a new payment service of its own. The new offering is based on Android tablets and is expected to replace the iPads that are currently used by many businesses for Square transactions. The goal of Square’s Android-based offering is to allow it to respond to any attempt that Apple might make to block Square Register from working with the iPad.
Both Google and Square are already taking part in the great mobile payments battle, but their offerings haven’t yet taken off like Apple Pay has, which still hasn’t exactly gained mainstream adoption quite yet. However, Google and Square appear to be prepping new services just in case Apple Pay does take off.
