Despite the fact that it's been around for a couple of years now, we haven’t seen much of Tizen in the consumer space quite yet. Thanks to Samsung, that's going to change in 2015.
Samsung has announced that all of the Smart TVs that it releases in 2015 will be powered by Tizen-based software. The platform will include a refreshed Smart Hub with a screen that’ll display your recently-accessed content as well as recommendations for you. There’ll also be Wi-Fi Direct support for sharing content from your phone or tablet to the TV and vice versa, and you’ll be able to connect to your mobile devices using Bluetooth Low Energy as well. Samsung promises that you’ll have the ability to view live broadcasts or TV content on your mobile device anywhere in your home, even if your TV as off.
Samsung’s also got several content partnerships planned for its Tizen-powered TVs. Those will include Samsung Sports Live for watching living games while getting stats on the same display, PlayStation Now for streaming PS3 games on your TV, the Just Dance Now game, and Samsung’s own Milk Video service.
Samsung is one of Tizen’s biggest backers and one of its primary developers, and it’s also one of the bigger TV manufacturers around, so it’s no surprise to see Samsung putting its homegrown platform on its TVs to get more people using Tizen. The good news is that since the Tizen-powered TVs will support Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth, you won’t need a Tizen phone to take advantage of the features of these TVs.
