One of the features that mobile spec hounds love to see in new smartphones is the inclusion of 3GB of RAM. However, it looks like that number will likely jump to 4GB next year thanks to Samsung.

Samsung says that it has started mass production of 8 gigabit (Gb) low power double data rate 4 (LPDDR4) mobile DRAM that’s based on 20-nanometer process. What does that all mean? We could start to see smartphones and tablets with 4 gigabyte (GB) of RAM in 2015.

Samsung says that its new 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM is capable of twice the performance and density of 4Gb LPDDR3 DRAM that’s also based on 20nm tech. The 8Gb LPDDR4 DRAM is also capable of UHD video capture and playback as well as continuous capture of images more than 20 megapixels in size.

Mobile hardware is always increasing in power, and so it was only a matter of time before we made the jump from 3GB of RAM in our phones and tablets to 4GB. Samsung says that it’ll begin providing 4GB packages to device makers in early 2015, and while it’s unclear exactly when we’ll see the first device with that feature, the fact that this is an industry of “firsts” means that I’m sure manufacturers will be in a rush to include it in their products.
