Must…resist…fire sale…joke.
Amazon is now selling the Fire phone for just $199 unlocked and without a contract. That’s how much the Fire phone cost with a two-year contract when it launched back in July, and if you wanted it without a commitment at launch, you’d have to pony up $649.
This $199 unlocked Fire phone works with GSM carriers AT&T, T-Mobile, MetroPCS, Simple Mobile, Net10, Straight Talk, h20 Wireless and more. It’s also worth noting that buyers get a full year of Amazon Prime with this $199 unlocked Fire phone, just like they would with the on-contract model. A year of Amazon Prime normally costs $99.
The Amazon Fire phone has had a bit of a rough go since its launch in July. It got some less than stellar reviews out of the gate, then had its on-contract price cut to 99 cents. Then in October, we learned that Amazon was taking an $83 million charge for unsold Fire phone inventory.
So is the Fire phone worth it at $199 unlocked and without a contract? It’s certainly a lot more palatable than ever before, especially considering that you’re still getting a full year of Amazon Prime as well. While you won’t be getting Google apps or Google Play access with the Fire phone, you do get unique Amazon apps like Firefly, which will help you identify products and buy them from Amazon. And while it’s not exactly high-end, the Fire phone isn’t a slouch in the specs department, packing a 13-megapixel rear camera and 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor.
Are you going to pick up an Amazon Fire phone for $199 without a commitment?
