If you liked that Gmail v5.0 app that leaked out over the weekend, well, I’ve got some good news for you: it’s now officially official.
The new Gmail app for Android features a new Material Design that’s in line with the overall look of Android 5.0 Lollipop. That includes refreshed icons, a floating Reply button at the bottom of every message and a more colorful UI.
Additionally, Google has added support for POP/IMAP email accounts in this Gmail update. That means that you can add other accounts like Yahoo and Outlook into your Gmail app.
Finally, Google says that Android tablet users will have an easier time switching between accounts and inbox categories with this updated app.
This updated Gmail app is compatible with devices running Android 4.0 or higher. Google says that it’ll roll out through Google Play “over the next few days.” If you just can’t wait that long, though, the folks at Android Police have the APK for you to sideload.
This looks like a pretty spiffy update to Gmail for Android. Not only is the new user interface much improved compared to the old one, but the addition of POP/IMAP support makes the app much more useful and obviates the need for Android’s stock Email app.
