Love crazy-thin bezels like the ones found on the new Sharp Aquos Crystal? If so, LG’s got some news that ought to get you excited.
LG Display has developed a 5.3-inch Full HD (1920x1080) LCD panel for displays with a bezel that’s just 0.7mm thick. That makes the left and right bezels narrower than a credit card, which is 0.8mm thick.
To get bezels that thin, LG Display says that it used its “Neo Edge” technology that uses an adhesive instead of double-sided tape to attach and seal the area of the panel’s circuit board and backlight. Since there’s no plastic guide panel to attach the panel and backlight, the Neo Edge tech can offer minimal bezel width while blocking light leakage as well as water and dust. Neo Tech also prevents corrosion that can occur with double-sided tape and improve the durability of the panel thanks to the adhesive’s increased elasticity.
LG Display says that it’ll start mass production of its new panel in November, with the initial supply going to China. With a super-thin bezel and high resolution, LG Display’s new panel sounds like it could make a device look pretty good. Of course, bezels also serve the purpose of giving your fingers somewhere to rest while using the device, so it’ll be interesting to see how comfortable the products with the display are to use in real life.
