Deezer acquires popular podcast app Stitcher

Big news in the mobile audio world this morning, as a music streaming service has acquired a popular podcast app.

Deeper announced today that it’s acquiring Stitcher, an app used for listening to talk radio and podcasts on the go. With the acquisition, Deezer will integrate more than 35,000 shows to its catalog, which currently hosts more than 35 million songs. The deal will also grow Deezer’s presence in the automotive market in which Stitcher is present in 50 vehicle models and is a launch partner for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

If you’re already a Stitcher user, don’t fret. Deezer says that it’ll continue to support Stitcher's mobile offerings, including its Android and iOS apps. It’s also worth noting that while Deezer is available in more than 180 countries, the US isn’t one of them. However, Deezer does say that it’ll launch in the US “soon.”

While Deezer is a well-known music streaming service with 16 million active monthly users and 5 million Premium+ paid subscribers, it still has to do battle with big competition like Spotify. This acquisition of Stitcher could help Deezer stand out a bit, allowing listeners to stick to Deezer for all their audio needs rather than jumping between apps for music and podcasts.

Do you use Deezer or Stitcher to listen to audio on your mobile devices?
