Sundar Pichai became a big name in the mobile world when he replaced Andy Rubin as head of Android at Google in early 2013. At that time he was in charge of Chrome and Apps as well as Android, but now it looks like he’s going to be taking on an even bigger role at Google.
A report from Re/code claims that Pichai has been put in charge of Google’s core products by CEO Larry Page. Pichai will now oversee research, search, maps, Google+, commerce and ads and infrastructure for Google and will have six executives reporting to him.
Page is said to have given Pichai more responsibility so that he can focus on the “bigger picture” and help Google continue to innovate. He apparently had a hard time doing that with so many departments to oversee and multiple execs reporting to him.
Pichai has become a well-known name in tech in recent years, and now it looks like he’s going to play an even bigger role in Google. Android and Chrome have continued to grow and improve under his watch, and so it’ll be interesting to see what happens going forward now that he’s in charge of so many Google products.
