Facebook has created a number of apps outside of its main FB app over the years, including Paper, Messenger and more. Today it added one more app to that list with the launch of Rooms.

Facebook’s Rooms app is a callback to the earlier days of the Internet that saw many users congregating in chat rooms to discuss their favorite topics. The app allows you to create chat rooms based on whatever you want and share photos, videos and text inside of them. You can also tweak the room itself, setting the emoji, changing the text and colors, adding pinned messages, customize member permissions and decide if people can link to your room on the web.

When you join a room, you can use whatever name you’d like, which suggests that Rooms is that anonymous chat app that we heard about recently. Facebook says that you can go by your actual name in one room but then use something like “jm90403” in another.

Facebook Rooms is now available for download on iOS in the US, UK and select other English-speaking countries. Facebook is looking to promote Rooms by touting communities that it thinks are special, and so if you think your room qualifies, you can invite the team to check it out by sending an email invitation to team@rooms.me.

With social networks like Facebook and Twitter that allow users to curate who they chat with, things like chat rooms are far less prevalent than they used to be. It’s interesting to see Facebook trying to revive the chat room of old, and it’ll be interesting to see how people respond. Lots of folks have probably never used an old-school Internet chat room, and some may not be into the idea of chatting with random strangers, though others will likely be into it.
