It’s been quite a while since we last saw a webOS smartphone, but that doesn’t mean that we’ve been without any webOS hardware in the interim. LG has been producing webOS-powered televisions since early 2014, and now it looks like the Life’s Good crew is set to bring webOS to our wrists as well.
An official LG webOS SmartWatch developer site was spotted overnight. The pages showed a round-faced watch and also teased a software development kit for the devices.
Unfortunately, site has since been taken offline. When asked about it, LG told The Verge that “there are many initiatives going on at LG at any given moment. The majority of them never see the light of day.”
While webOS never seemed to gain traction with consumers, it often received praise from reviewers. A webOS SmartWatch could be the next best thing to getting a new webOS smartphone, which doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon. Here’s to hoping that, if a webOS SmartWatch does end up launching, LG doesn’t repeat the actions that caused webOS to fail in the past, like carrier exclusivity and creepy advertising.
While we wait to hear more, I’ve gone ahead and left a bit of nostalgia for you below in the form of an HP Pre 3 unboxing. Check it out and get (re)acquainted with webOS.
