Remember those OnePlus One StyleSwap covers that were announced back in July? Well we haven’t heard much about them since then, and now we know why.

OnePlus took to its forums today to announce that it’s stopping production of StyleSwap covers for the OnePlus One. The company explains that it’s experienced “technical difficulties” while producing bamboo covers, which has lead to a low number of acceptable covers. The covers are described as making switching back panels tough and also leaving the rear cover “creaky or loose,” and it’s also said that swapping panels could damage the battery.

OnePlus says that it was able to produce a “small number” of bamboo StyleSwap covers that met its quality expectation and that it will sell them with instructions on how to put them on the One without damaging it. The company has previously said that the bamboo StyleSwap cover would cost $49. OnePlus is also considering going ahead with production of limited edition Kevlar and denim-backed OnePlus One units.

The OnePlus One has had a bit of a rocky history that includes questionable promotions, invite-only buying systems and more, and this StyleSwap issue just adds to that. The news is definitely a bit of a bummer since the StyleSwap covers would’ve allowed users to customize their hardware, something that you don’t see much of in mobile. OnePlus promises that things will be different in the future, though, teasing that it now knows what to do to ensure this won’t be an issue with the “OnePlus 2.”
