The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus officially went up for preorder last Friday, and while sales officially kicked off at 12:01 AM PT/3:01 AM ET, that didn’t stop consumers from buying a record number of devices.

Apple just announced that it sold more than 4 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units in the first 24 hours of availability, which is a record number of first day pre-orders. Demand for the new iPhone models has exceeded the pre-order supply, Apple says, and so many orders aren’t expected to be delivered until October. However, some units will be available for purchase in stores on Friday, September 19 at 8:00 AM.

Apple also revealed that its new iPhone models will arrive in more than 20 additional countries on Friday, September 26. The list of markets getting the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 26 includes Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and United Arab Emirates.
