Remember earlier this year when we heard about a little spat between Google and Samsung regarding TouchWiz and Samsung’s efforts to skin Android? Well that may not be the only thing that El Goog and Sammy are fighting about.
According to a new report from The Information, Google CEO Larry Page told Samsung Vice Chairman Jay Y. Lee that he was “frustrated” that Samsung was focusing more on its Tizen-powered smartwatches than its Android Wear unit. The meeting between the two execs is described as having been “tense.”
It’s clear that Samsung is putting a lot of support behind Tizen. Not only has it created its own smartphone running the OS, but its also released three new wearables that are powered by Tizen and it also recently updated the original Galaxy Gear from Android to Tizen.
So what will come of this alleged tiff between Google and Samsung? That’s a mystery for now, but considering all of the work that Samsung has already put into Tizen, I doubt that it will abandon the platform or scale back its support for Google. Android Wear is still in its infancy, so it’s possible that we could see Samsung put more weight behind that platform by releasing more wearables. After all, we know that the company isn’t afraid of rapid fire product releases.
What do you make of this rumor? Do you think that Samsung should continue focusing on Tizen or increase its Android Wear efforts?
