In an effort to try and take some market revenue away from the Google Play Store, Samsung has rebranded and redesigned its app store. The new store plays as a portal to "hundreds of apps" available only to Samsung Galaxy devices. Samsung Galaxy Apps - as it's now known - will also offer far more customization options for Galaxy fans everywhere.
The new store is broken up in to three main sections: Best Picks, Top and For Galaxy. Samsung has a little more to say about the For Galaxy category:
"For Galaxy includes up to four sections. Galaxy Gifts offers premium apps exclusively for Galaxy devices. Galaxy Essentials delivers must-have apps for Galaxy devices. Apps for Professionals is the home of business focused apps and other services that fully utilize the features of Galaxy devices. Galaxy Specials lets users download apps specifically created by using Samsung SDKs."
Best Picks allows customers to easily see recommended apps and promos, while the Top section just shows off the most popular apps and content, as you'd expect.
Of course, it'll be some time before any OEM's own app stores will come close to the level of sales, and number of apps that Google Play Store has, but we've seen a number of moves recently by a variety of companies to make their stores less avoidable. Amazon recently hosted its own mega app giveaway on the appstore, offering a handful of games and productivity tools for no cost. There have also been a number of reports recently of apps being exclusively available through Amazon's store, essentially forcing Android users to use the appstore if they want particular titles.
There's nothing wrong with competition, and we're better off for it as consumers - at least financially - but it does make for a frustrating experience when you're updating apps from 3-4 different locations instead of one central store.
What do you think? Do you use Samsung's app store, or do you just stick to Google Play?
