Samsung’s Galaxy S smartphones have steadily been growing in size with each new generation. Starting with the 4.7-inch Galaxy S III, the company decided to create a similar offering for folks that prefer smaller handsets and launched the Galaxy S III mini. It made a similar move with the Galaxy S 4 and Galaxy S4 mini, and that trend continues again this year with the Galaxy S5.
Samsung today made the Galaxy S5 mini officially official. The device features a design similar to its big sibling, complete with rounded corners, a dimpled backside, a physical Home button and capacitive Recent Apps and Back keys. Once you dive inside of the S5 mini, though, things get a little different.
The Galaxy S5 mini boasts a 4.5-inch 1280x720 Super AMOLED screen, down from the Galaxy S5’s 5.1-inch 1920x1080 Super AMOLED panel. Also included with the Galaxy S5 mini is a 1.4GHz quad-core processor, 8-megapixel rear and 2.1-megapixel front cameras, 16GB of storage, a microSD card slot, 1.5GB of RAM, a dust and water resistant body and a 2100mAh battery. To compare, the Galaxy S5 features a 2.5GHz quad-core processor, 16-megapixel rear camera and 2800mAh battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini also includes an array of unique sensors. Included in the bunch is a heart rate monitor that rests below the phone’s rear camera as well as a fingerprint scanner built into the Home button.
Unfortunately for Android fans longing for a “mini” smartphone with high-end specs, it looks like the Galaxy S5 mini follows in the footsteps of most other mini phones by offering a smaller size than its big sibling but weaker specs as well. The S5 mini looks like a respectable mid-range offering, though, and anyone that’s not a spec hound could end up liking this device thanks to its Galaxy S5-like design and hopefully more affordable price tag.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 mini will launch in Russia in early July and will expand throughout the global market later on. Expect it to be available in Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Cold colors.
