With the release of Android 4.4 KitKat, Google focused on making its mobile operating system perform better on lower-specced hardware. Now Google will continue its focus on entry-level Android smartphones with its new Android One effort.

Android One is a set of hardware reference platforms focused on emerging markets. With Android One, manufacturers can create smartphones that are high-quality but still affordable.

Android One will offer a Nexus-like stock software experience, complete with automatic updates. However, Google does note that manufacturers will be able to include their own apps on Android One devices on top of the stock OS.

Android One will debut in India later this year with support from Karbonn, Micromax and Spice. The first Android One smartphone is from Micromax and includes a 4.5-inch display, SD card slot, dual-SIM and FM radio, all of which Google says are important to consumers in developing markets. Micromax’s Android One phone is expected to cost less than $100.
