Over the past year or so, two product categories that’ve exploded in size are wearables and connected devices, also known as the “Internet of things.” Apple has long been rumored to be entering the former market with a smartwatch, and now a new report claims that it may be planning to enter the latter category as well.
According to sources speaking to the Financial Times, Apple is prepping some new software that would allow iPhone owners to control things like lights, security systems and household appliances. One example of the way that this system might work is that a user’s iPhone could wirelessly communicate with the smart home system and automatically turn on the house lights when the user gets home.
This smart home system is rumored to be scheduled for an official announcement at WWDC 2014, which kicks off on June 2. Specific launch and product details aren’t mentioned in today’s leak, but it is said that Apple has been talking with other manufacturers whose products may be certified to work with Apple’s system and sold in the Cupertino firm’s stores.
As I mentioned before, the connected appliances product category has grown quite a bit lately. One of the most notable devices is the Nest smart thermostat, whose owner was recently acquired by Google. Apple could recognize that this “Internet of things” movement is getting big and so it may want to get in on it as soon as possible. Plus, as the FT notes, this system could be a way to get more folks to join the iOS ecosystem by purchasing iPhones and iPads.
