Apple and Samsung recently went to court for the second time, and after each side argued its case, the jury handed down its decision in the case.
Just as with the jury trial in 2012, Apple was handed a victory in its latest courtroom battle with Samsung. The Cupertino firm’s winnings were substantially smaller this time around, though, as the jury awarded Apple $119.6 million in damages. Apple was seeking $2.2 billion. The jury also decided that Apple had infringed on a single Samsung patent and awarded Sammy a total of $158,400 as a result.
The jury found that Samsung had infringed on two Apple patents. The first is the ‘721 patent that covers quick-links, which the jury found that all the accused Samsung devices infringed on. The second is the ‘721 slide-to-unlock patent, which only select Samsung products infringed upon.
Apple gave the following statement to Re/code regarding its victory:
“We are grateful to the jury and the court for their service. Today’s ruling reinforces what courts around the world have already found: that Samsung willfully stole our ideas and copied our products. We are fighting to defend the hard work that goes into beloved products like the iPhone, which our employees devote their lives to designing and delivering for our customers.”
Overall this verdict seems like a bit of a mixed bag. Apple is obviously pleased that the jury sided with it on two patents and awarded it nearly $120 million. Meanwhile, Samsung is likely pleased that it only needs to pay a fraction of what Apple wanted in damages.
