Looks like Foursquare isn’t the only company announcing some major app news today.
Snapchat today announced that it’s rolling out an update to its Android and iOS apps that adds a new Chat feature. Just as its name suggests, Chat enables users to send text messages to their Snapchat friends.
Once inside the app, you just need to swipe right on a friend’s name to start chatting. Of course, since this is Snapchat, you and your friend’s messages will be cleared once you leave chat screen. If you’d like to save some or all of the chat, you can do so by tapping on a particular message or taking a good ol’ screenshot.
Snapchat also says that the app will alert you when a friend is Here in your Chat. Once you’re both in the room, you can press and hold to initiate a video chat.
Chat is a pretty major addition to the Snapchat app, and if you and your friends use the app heavily enough, the new feature could help to make Snapchat your go-to messaging app. This new Snapchat app is now available in both Google Play and the App Store. A brief promo video for the new Chat feature is available below.
