Time for another celebrity-mobile mashup! Lenovo Chief Marketing Officer David Roman has confirmed to Re/code that his company is teaming up with Ashton Kutcher to create a line of special edition smartphones that'll launch later this year.
Details on the products themselves are still light, but Roman promised that this isn't just a situation where Kutcher is lending his name for marketing purposes. Instead, the actor will actually be putting in work on designing the user experience of the phones. "I know on one level, it sounds corny, but it is real. He not only sees himself as an engineer, but he is an engineer," Roman said. "If he sees a problem, he wants to solve it."
Kutcher and Lenovo have actually been working together since last year, but this is the first we've heard of Kutcher actually getting involved in the process of creating hardware. Typically when a celebrity teams up with a technology company to promote their products, the celeb appears on stage at a conference or appears in some advertising for their partner company. Kutcher will apparently be much more hands-on, though, and so it'll be interesting to see what kind of smartphones he and Lenovo can churn out and how they might differ from Lenovo's other handsets.
