Flappy Bird has become one of the hottest topics in mobile over the past week or so thanks to millions and millions of Android and iOS users that downloaded the simple yet addicting game to see just how many pipes they can guide their bird past. That's why many people were shocked yesterday when Flappy Bird creator Dong Nguyen tweeted that he was taking the game offline in 22 hours.
In a series of tweets, Nguyen said that while Flappy Bird was a success, he also hates the game because it "ruins [his] simple life." He went on to explain that the decision to pull Flappy Bird wasn't related to anything legal. Instead, Nguyen said that he simply "cannot take this anymore." Nguyen also confirmed that he has no interest in selling Flappy Bird.
Fast-forward to today, and it appears that Nguyen is keeping word. Flappy Bird has disappeared from the iOS App Store's "Top Free" chart and also fails to show up in a search. The app page is still accessible for some using a direct link, but if the user tries to actually download the game, a "This item is temporarily unavailable" error message pops up.
Meanwhile, Flappy Bird is missing from the Play Store's "Top Free" and "Top Games" apps list as of this writing and is also absent when performing a Play Store search for the game's title.
Nguyen recently revealed that Flappy Bird was earning him upwards of $50,000 a day from ads, and so many see his decision to yank the app from the App Store and Google Play as a strange one. While Nguyen hasn't said elaborated on how Flappy Bird "ruins" his life, it's possible that the popularity and pressure to continue improving on the app became too much and began to affect his personal life. Whatever the reason, it definitely looks like Flappy Bird is beginning to disappear from both Apple and Google's app marketplaces.
If you never played the game and want to try and see what all the talk was about before it completely disappears, links to Flappy Bird's pages in both the App Store and Google Play can be found below.
