Just a couple of days after rolling its 4G LTE network out to an additional 45 markets, Sprint today announced that its Spark tri-band LTE service is growing as well.
Dan Hesse and Co. said this morning that Sprint Spark is now live in its hometown market of Kansas City, with coverage extending to surrounding areas like Brookside, The Legends, downtown and Overland Park. This newly-activated Spark coverage is expected to give Sprint customers in the area "a noticeable difference in data speeds" in the coming months.
Sprint Spark utilizes the carrier's three bands of LTE spectrum — 800MHz, 1.9GHz and 2.5GHz — to deliver faster network speeds and increased capacity. Sprint claims that Spark can deliver download speeds of up to 60Mbps today, with that number expected to triple by late 2015. The service is available in 12 markets following today's expansion and is expected to hit 100 of the largest U.S. cities over the next 3 years. The current batch of Sprint Spark markets includes Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Antonio and Tampa.
In order to use Sprint Spark, consumers will need a Spark-compatible piece of hardware. That list currently includes devices like the LG G Flex and NETGEAR LTE Gateway 6100D, as well as products that'll gain Sprint Spark support through a software update, which includes the HTC One max and Google Nexus 5.
