A little less than a year after it sold webOS to LG, HP today made another deal to rid itself of the remainder of the Palm purchase that it made way back in 2010.
Qualcomm just announced that it has agreed to purchase a large patent portfolio from HP that consists of 1,400 granted and pending U.S. patents and another 1,000 patents from other parts of the globe. The patents in question come from Palm, iPAQ and Bitfone and include ones that cover "fundamental mobile operating system techniques."
The fact that Qualcomm has acquired Palm and IPAQ patents is a pretty big deal, not only because Qualcomm is a chip maker but also because some of the patents relate to major mobile features. Details on this transaction are pretty light, including the amount that Qualcomm has agreed to pay for HP's portfolio o' patents, but I'm sure that more information will trickle out in the coming days and weeks.
