The year 2013 brought with it an explosion in the wearables market thanks to the arrival of devices like the Pebble smartwatch, Samsung's Galaxy Gear and Google Glass. If CES is any indication, 2014 is going to be an even bigger year for the wearable tech segment, and Samsung has revealed that it intends to be a part of that growth.
In an interview with Recode, Samsung exec Dennis Miloseski teased that this is "going to be a really big year" for his company and that Samsung has product launches planned around the debut of its flagship devices. Miloseski, head of studio for Samsung Design America, didn't elaborate on the hardware that's coming or exactly when it'll launch, but he did note that Samsung typically launches a new Galaxy S phone in the spring and a Galaxy Note in the fall.
Miloseski went on to talk about the wearable product category more generally. For example, he said that as the market and products grow, we'll see a mixture of wearable tech that may or may not rely on a connection to a phone for its data. Battery life is one of the main concerns for wearables now, he said, and so it makes sense for most devices to be tethered to a phone rather than feature its own battery-draining hardware, like a GPS. Miloseski also said that if the wearable market wants to expand, it needs to offer stylish products that appeal to men and women.
With the introduction of devices like the Pebble Steel, LG Lifeband Touch, LG Heart Rate Earphones and Sony's SmartBand, there's no question that the wearable tech market is going to be big in 2014. Samsung has already brought several wearable devices to market, and so it's no surprise to hear that the company wants to get itself a piece of the wearable pie that's going to be served up this year. We'll just have to wait and see what Samsung's got in store, but I wouldn't be surprised to see an updated Galaxy Gear and perhaps an activity tracker, too. Given Miloseski's statements about 2014 being big for Samsung and that stylish hardware is important, it'll definitely be interesting to see what kind of products Samsung rolls out in 2014.
