Just a few months after the debut of the Vibe X, Lenovo today took the wraps off of the newest device in its Vibe family. The Vibe Z is Lenovo's new flagship Android smartphone and also happens to be its first 4G LTE handset, offering download speeds of up to 150Mbps and uploads speeds that can reach 50Mbps. Also included is GSM/UMTS support, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0.
The Vibe Z's high-end features don't stop at its connectivity. The front of the unit is home to a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 IPS display and 5-megapixel camera that's packing an 84-degree wide-angle lens. Meanwhile, the Vibe Z's laser-etched, fabric-like backside includes a 13-megapixel shooter with an f/1.8 aperture lens.
Diving into the Vibe Z's 7.9mm-thick body, we're greeted by a 2.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, 2GB RAM and up to 16GB storage. Lenovo has decided to preload the Vibe Z with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and has also added in a few of its own software goodies, like gestures that are meant to make it easier to use large-screened hardware with one hand.
Along with the flagship Vibe Z, Lenovo today also announced a few pieces of more mid-range hardware. The S930 and S650 are two members of the S family that both sport quad-core MediaTek processors, 8-megapixel rear cameras with secondary front-facing shooters, dual-SIM support and 8GB storage packed into bodies that measure 8.7mm thick. Both phones are powered by Android 4.2 and include Lenovo customizations, such as gesture controls and photo editing apps.
While they share quite a few specs, there are a couple of important differences between the S930 and S650 that are worth acknowledging. The biggie involves their displays: The S930 features a 6-inch 1280x720 screen, while the S650 comes with a smaller 4.7-inch 960x540 display. The S930 also features two speakers with Dolby Digital Plus support and directional sensors for moving characters in 3D.
Rounding out Lenovo's new phone quartet is the A859. Described as being "designed for great all-around performance," the A859 includes a 5-inch 1280x720 IPS display and camera on its face, an 8-megapixel shooter around back and a MediaTek 6582 processor inside of its 9.2mm-thick frame. Rounding out the A859's spec list is 8GB of built-in storage, dual-SIM support and Android 4.2.
So what about the all-important pricing and availability details? Lenovo says that the Vibe Z will launch in February in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and the Philippines with a starting price of $549. Meanwhile, the S930, S650 and A859 are all available starting today for $319, $229 and $219, respectively. They can be found in countries where Lenovo smartphones are sold.
Overall it sounds like Lenovo's got a nice, wide range of Android hardware coming down the pipeline. The Vibe Z is likely to garner the most attention of the bunch thanks to the fact that it includes all of the bells and whistles that we've come to expect from a high-end Android phone, including a 5.5-inch 1080p display and 2.2GHz quad-core processor. It's a pretty sharp-looking device too, featuring a silver finish and laser-etched back cover.
Unfortunately, Lenovo hasn't made any announcements regarding a U.S. launch for the Vibe Z, but the company has previously said that it hopes to begin selling smartphones in the States in the future. It's not clear if the Vibe Z is one of the devices that Lenovo plans to bring to the U.S., but I'm sure that there wouldn't be any complaints if it were.
