Love high-resolution displays? If so, you may want to take a seat for this one. Today Vivo took the veil off of its newest Android handset, the Xplay 3S, which features a 6-inch 2560x1440 touchscreen. That works out to a pixel density of 490ppi, which is quite a bit higher than the iPhone 5s's 390ppi screen, the Nexus 5's 445ppi display and the HTC One's 468ppi face.
That 6-inch 2560x1440 display isn't the only high-end feature that the Xplay 3S has going for it. Vivo has also packed in ESS Technology's ES9018 digital-to-audio converter, Texas Instruments' OPA2604 amplifier and a DTS Headphone:X feature that helps to create a 7.1 or 11.1 surround sound effect with a pair of stereo headphones. The combination of those three features make for a device that I'm sure will pique the interest of many an audio nerd.
The chip that's powering these high-end features is a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor that's paired with an Adreno 330 GPU. That chip is aided by 3GB RAM and is powered by a 3200mAh battery. Rounding out the Xplay 3S's feature set is a 13-megapixel rear camera with an f/1.8 aperture lens that's resting right above a fingerprint sensor, a second camera around front that's of the 5-megapixel variety and 32GB of built-in storage that can be supplemented with a microSD card when you get into a pack rat state of mind. The Xplay 3S runs Android beneath Vivo's custom Funtouch OS.
So how much damage will a smartphone with a 6-inch 2560x1440 display do to your wallet? The Xplay 3S will carry a price tag of CN¥3,498 ($576 USD) when it launches, which isn't bad considering all of the goodies that are packed inside of it. I'm sure that some folks will shout that there's no need for such a high-res display on a 6-inch smartphone, but even if you're perfectly content with a 720p or 1080p panel, it's tough to not be impressed by the number of pixels that the Xplay 3S's screen is packing. There's no word yet on when we'll be able to lay our eyes on that display for ourselves, but Vivo has told Engadget that it'll be making some international moves in 2014, so here's to hoping that the Xplay 3S plays a big role in those plans.
