One week after HTC and Motorola spilled the details of their Android 4.4 update plans, it's now Sony's turn to talk KitKat. The company today took to its official product blog to announce its plans for Android 4.3 and Android 4.4 updates for several of its Xperia-branded devices.
First up, Sony says that it intends to push Android 4.3 Jelly Bean updates to a range of its Xperia smartphones. The list of handsets that will be updated includes the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia T, Xperia TX and Xperia V. The Android 4.3 updates are expected to begin flowing sometime next month, but as is usually the case with software updates, Sony cautions that the actual timing of the rollouts will vary by market and carrier.
Moving on to Google's latest dessert, Sony has revealed that it will be updating the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 to Android 4.4 KitKat. Unfortunately for the owners of those five products, there's no mention of when we might see these updates pushed out. It's also worth noting that Sony said that this is "the first raft" of products that it plans to update to Android 4.4, so if your device isn't included in today's list, there's still a chance that it could be added to the KitKat Club later on.
While details on Sony's actual rollout plans for its Android 4.3 and Android 4.4 updates are still light at this point, it's good to see that the company is keeping us and its customers in the loop. Now that Sony has at least named which of its products will receive updates, owners of these various Xperia phones can rest a little easier knowing that they've got either some new Jelly Beans or a KitKat bar headed their way.
