Last week Samsung announced that several of its Galaxy smartphones would soon receive updates that include Android 4.3 and compatibility with its new Galaxy Gear smartwatch. Now Samsung's U.S. arm has reaffirmed those update plans and shed a bit more light on exactly what goodies that the new software includes. The company says that the Galaxy S 4, S III and Note II will receive a Premium Suite update in the coming weeks. The update, which is apparently starting today for unspecified models, includes the following features:
The Galaxy S4 mini and Galaxy Mega will also be updated with Galaxy Gear compatibility in the coming months. As is usually the case with software updates in the U.S., the exact timing for each rollout will vary between carriers and devices.
Samsung also announced when its recently-announced Galaxy Tab 3 Kids will officially go on sale in the U.S. The child-friendly tablet will be available for purchase starting on Nov. 10 for $229.99, with pre-orders slated to kick off on Nov. 1. Samsung also plans to offer a bundle that includes the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids and a hard case for $249.99. The slate will be available from a number of different retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Fry’s, Office Depot, Sam’s Club, Tiger Direct, Toys “R” Us and Samsung's own website.
The Galaxy Tab 3 Kids sports a 7-inch 1024x600 display and, as its name implies, includes some child-friendly features. There are a number of educational and kid-focused games that will come preloaded along with a special user interface that's intended to be easy for a child to navigate. Parental controls are also included so that all of the 'rents out there can decide exactly what content their kids can access and how long they can use the device. Finally, the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids features an easy-to-grip orange case for added protection. Samsung also notes that the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids can be switched into Standard Mode for a more traditional tablet experience.
Along with its 7-inch screen, the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids is packing a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 3-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras, 8GB storage, microSD slot, 1GB RAM and a 4,000mAh battery. Buyers will also receive several extras as part of the Galaxy Perks program, including a $10 Google Play credit, 12 months of free Boingo Mobile Wi-Fi access, 3 months of Hulu Plus access and up to 50GB of Dropbox storage space for 2 years.
