The rumors are ramping up and the leaks are increasing in numbers by the day as we await for the official announcement and release of the Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 (KitKat). A new software version, especially one worthy of a name change, is always something to get excited about because that usually means there are some drastic (or at least very important) changes on the way. It wasn't all that long ago that we were waiting patiently for the arrival of iOS 7, a much needed update from Apple, so it's interesting that a month or so later we're seeing a pretty big update from Android as well.

When I first heard about iOS 7, I didn't really think twice about how to react. As an iPhone user (at the time) I was pretty excited; I already liked iOS 6, and I had a feeling that iOS 7 was going to be a big change from iOS 6 and below. I figured since iOS was such a solid platform that iOS 7 would only make it better - and for some, it did. iOS 7 was really the change that Apple needed to make in order to keep people at least interested, which it did. I personally am not a huge fan of the update, but mostly because I think it's ugly. Functionality-wise, iOS 7 did bring some much-needed features to the table, and I can appreciate that. But when it came to the design overhaul of iOS 7, I was less than pleased. It just didn't seem to give off that "professional" vibe that I got from previous versions; it felt very "Lisa Frank", to be honest.

But that's all been said and done. iOS 7 isn't exactly old news yet, but KitKat is moving in and it's taking over. I'm seeing less and less being said about iOS 7 in favor of news regarding KitKat - which makes sense, given that it hasn't been officially released yet, and details regarding the software update are relatively mum compared to iOS 7, which went through months of beta testing with developers. When it comes to KitKat, the most "trustworthy" source we have, depending on how seriously you take rumors and leaks, is a 7-minute video that runs through KitKat and what the Nexus 5 may end up looking like. It seems legit, but who knows? It's best to take these types of things with a grain of salt. It's a possibility that this could be what KitKat is, but there's also the possibility that it's not.

Despite all the secretiveness that surrounds KitKat, I'd have to say that I admit to being more excited by iOS 7, despite not liking the color scheme. Not only did iOS 7 drastically change the way iOS looks, which it hasn't done since the iPhone's inception in 2007, but they did so at a time where iOS and Apple really needed to pick up the pace, as they started losing the ropes to the likes of Android. When it comes to KitKat, it's exciting because people who are still using older Androids will likely have a shot of being able to upgrade softwares still, but on the other hand, Android doesn't look to be losing the ropes any time soon. With so much adoption of the platform from all across the world, and with more manufacturers interested in picking Android up all the time, it just doesn't seem as exciting because Android has everything right now. It's like when the rich gets richer. Although Android worked hard to get to where it is today, it makes for a boring story when they're winning and pulling ahead even further. I like the playing field to be a little more even. I think KitKat will be a great upgrade for Android, but I have to admit that I'm not as excited about it as I was for iOS 7.

That being said, KitKat has yet to come out and I'm loosely basing my opinion on the leak that we were introduced to yesterday. I didn't see a lot of differences between Jelly Bean and KitKat, at least looks-wise, and I did feel somewhat disappointed when I saw the leak. A couple of changes here and there, but nothing that I would ever say, "Wow, that's different," to. But time will tell whether what we saw in the leak will end up being the finished product or not. Either way, I felt like iOS 7 made for a much more exciting upgrade than KitKat has.
