After promising back in July that it would launch nationwide before the end of 2013, it appears that the Isis mobile payment service is finally about to go live.
Isis today revealed that it plans to roll its service out nationwide sometime in the next few weeks, complete with a redesigned application. The payment service is expected to work with the majority of new Android smartphones, and Isis intends to offer an NFC sleeve and iOS app for the iPhone in the next few months for an undisclosed price. Support for BlackBerry and Windows Phone is slated to come at a later date.
Once the nationwide Isis service is activated, the company says that its users will have access to approximately 1.3 million contactless payment stations. Those stations will be available at 24 of the top 100 merchants.
Isis originally made its debut way back in Nov. 2010 when it was introduced as a joint venture between AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon. Since then, the service has hit a couple snags, but it's been undergoing trials in Austin and Salt Lake City and is finally almost ready for its big public launch. What will be interesting is seeing how consumers react to Isis once it does go live, as the public hasn't exactly been super accepting of any NFC-based mobile payment solution to date. Only a few more weeks until we find out.
