We've officially made our way into October, which means several things: that it's time to start seriously thinking about your Halloween costume, that there are only a few months of the year left and that it's once again time to check up on the official Android platform distribution numbers.
Google has updated its platform version numbers on the Android developer website, offering a peek at which flavors of its mobile operating system that were used to access the Play Store within the past seven days. Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean has found its way to the top of Google's dessert hill again, claiming a total market share of 48.6 percent. Two interesting tidbits about that stat are that Android 4.1 actually fell one percentage point from last month's numbers, and that Android 4.3 is making its first appearance with a 1.5 percent share.
Moving on down the dessert tray, all of the other versions of Android either lost market share compared to last month or stayed the same. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich dropped from 21.7 percent to 20.6 percent, Android 3.2 Honeycomb held steady at 0.1 percent, Android 2.3.x Gingerbread fell from 30.7 percent to 28.5 percent and Android 2.2 Froyo slipped just a tiny bit, going from 2.4 percent in September to 2.2 percent in October.
And that's how things stand in the Android world at the start of October. It's great to see Jelly Bean continue to command such a lead over its older counterparts, and while Android 4.3 is starting out small, that number should see some nice growth later this month as devices like the U.S. carrier-branded HTC Ones are updated to 4.3.
