Target today officially announced "brightspot," its new mobile service that it's launching in conjunction with T-Mobile. Just as the leaks predicted, brightspot is a prepaid service that will be sold in Target stores on Sunday, Oct. 6. Consumers will have the option of signing up for a $35 per month plan that includes unlimited talk and text or a $50 option that offers unlimited talk, text and web with 1GB of high-speed data.
On the hardware side of things, Target says that brightspot subscribers will have a "robust selection of phones" to choose from, including basic flip phones and more advanced models. No specific devices were mentioned. Users will also be able to buy a SIM card kit that'll enable brightspot service on an unlocked GSM handset.
One unique aspect of the brightspot service is its gift card reward program. For every six months of paid service, brightspot customers will receive a $25 Target gift card. The company will also give Target REDcard holders a five percent discount on their monthly bill.
Overall brightspot seems like a decent option for consumers searching for a new prepaid provider. The inclusion of unlimited data on the $50 plan is nice, although subscribers will still want to keep an eye on their data usage so that they'll know when they're about to deplete their high-speed data allotment. The $25 gift card rewarded for six months of paid service seems like a good perk as well, especially for those folks that regularly shop at Target stores. What do you all think of brightspot? Are any of you thinking about checking it out on Sunday?
