So, we've finally made it. The day of days! Today is September 4, and that means that IFA 2013 is just about to see one of the largest devices (and I don't really mean physical size this time) take center stage. Samsung will unveil the Galaxy Note III in just a matter of hours, and with it the Galaxy Gear smartwatch/fitness accessory/jewelry thing.
And let me be clear here: I'm excited to see what the Galaxy Gear looks like, and what it features, and how it will be different from every other smartwatch out there. Why? Because the smartwatch niche market is just about ready to explode, and it needs companies like Samsung, Apple, and others to really get it going.
But, while the Galaxy Gear will probably get plenty of stage time later today, it's really all about the Galaxy Note III. There's no doubt about that, right? This is Samsung's next big thing, after all. The next flagship. So obviously Samsung's going to go all out, and the Galaxy Note III will be the phone that everyone will want to get their hands on after it's unveiled.
We'll have to wait, and then wait some more. We waited for the announcement, and we all know we'll have to wait some time after the announcement to actually get the phone. But we're used to that, so we'll just keep talking about the phone, and the features, and everything else in between.
And yes, I'll be talking about specs and what not, but you know what I'm really interested in? The S Pen and its features.
When the Galaxy Note II was unveiled and lauded over, I didn't pay it much attention. To me, all I could see was a huge display and a lot of TouchWiz with saturated colors. The display was too big and all that, so I didn't give it a second look. And then I was convinced I should, and I started using the S Pen and my whole world turned upside down. I was blown away at how much I loved that little accessory.
And, as I've said, that's really the only reason why I liked the Galaxy Note II and I know for a fact that that's going to be the only reason why the Galaxy Note III is on my radar. While I've said that I hope the Note III sticks around 5.7-inches, I only say that because I really don't want it to be bigger than that. Otherwise it'll be too big. (And besides, they have to save that for the Note 4, right?)
Don't get me wrong, I'm excited to see what Samsung packs into the thin-but-large phone. But as far as I'm concerned it's a large Galaxy S device, and the S Pen is the only reason it stands out. That's fantastic, by the way. That isn't a bad thing. For me, the S Pen really gives the Galaxy Note III a reason to exist, especially with the large display.
Which is why later today, when Samsung unveils the Galaxy Note III, I'll be most excited when they're busy showing off the S Pen and what it can do for this generation's device. I don't want to make any compromises for the newest handset, either. I want the new S Pen features to really be worthwhile.
Then again, maybe it won't matter. After all, I would love to get a Galaxy Note III with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean right out of the box. That sounds like a dream come true, even. And hopefully those rumors pan out.
But, enough of that. I want to hear from you, now. I want you to tell me what you're looking forward to the most with the Galaxy Note III. What do you want to see, and what are you most excited about? Let me know!
