Just as was rumored, Verizon is now offering special "Verizon Max" data plans to its unlimited data customers that are interested in the Verizon Edge frequent-upgrader program. As noted by Droid-Life, the plans include a tier with 6GB per month for $30, the same price as Verizon's grandfathered unlimited plan, for a $50 option that offers 8GB of usage and tethering. If a consumer does decide to sign up for a Verizon Max data plan, his or her voice and messaging plans won't be affected.
Verizon has previously said that unlimited data customers may keep their grandfathered plan so long as they buy their hardware at full retail price. Since the big red carrier requires a service agreement with its new Verizon Edge plans (though not a "long-term service agreement), it's no surprise to see that unlimited data subscribers aren't able to keep their bottomless bucket while moving to Edge.
Obviously getting 6GB of data per month isn't quite the same as an unlimited helping of data, but these Verizon Max offerings are a bit better than their Share Everything equivalents, and it's kind of nice to see the big red carrier extending a couple of special plans to any unlimited customers that may want to jump onto Verizon Edge. That said, any Verizon customers that've held on to their unlimited plan for this long are either pretty heavy users or just really dedicated, and I'm guessing that it'd take a pretty sweet deal to convince them to give up their plans at this point.
