It's now been well over a year since the Motorola DROID 4 launched on Verizon and gave physical keyboard addicts a new QWERTY to lay their thumbs upon. That's led some folks to suggest that the OG DROID line could be gone for good, but if some newly-leaked images are to be believed, the keyboarded DROID is alive and well.
A set of photos posted to Chinese microblogging site Weibo show what maybe the Motorola DROID 5. The device sports Motorola and Verizon branding on its face, as well as Verizon's well-known 4G LTE logo on the back of its display. We can also see that this mystery handset sports a five-row QWERTY keyboard that's fairly similar to the laser cut keyboard found on the DROID 4, save for one or two small changes.
The straight-up spec details for this new Motorola slider are still a mystery, but the source of the images claims that NFC and wireless charging are on board. Interestingly, the photos show that the phone also sports a set of on-screen Android navigation keys, unlike the recently-introduced DROID Ultra, DROID Maxx and DROID mini and their capacitive navigation buttons.
The QWERTY-clad smartphone is becoming an increasingly rare creature in the smartphone world, which is why a new DROID slider could provide some much-needed relief to keyboard addicts and their thumbs. Verizon did launch a slider known as the LG Enact earlier this week, but given that phone's fairly entry-level spec list, it seems unlikely that many DROID fans would pull the trigger on one. We'll just have to wait to find out what kind of features this new Motorola-made handset might pack, but at least Verizon's card-carrying members of Club QWERTY can rest easy knowing that their keyboarded DROID drought may soon be coming to an end.
