We may only be around a month out from the official start of fall, but there are still plenty of opportunities for folks to head to the beach or dive into the pool and enjoy the warm weather. Today Virgin Mobile launched a device that can help its customers keep in touch while around the water. Dubbed the Reef, this device is Virgin's first waterproof smartphone, touting an IPX7 rating that will keep it protected in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.

In addition to its water resistance, the ZTE-made Reef features a 4-inch touchscreen and 1-megapixel camera on its face, as well as a 5-megapixel shooter on its backside. Buried inside the Reef is a 1GHz processor, 4GB storage, microSD card slot, 1GB RAM, 1650mAh battery and 3G connectivity. The Reef comes preloaded with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

The Reef may not be the highest-specced phone in Virgin Mobile's lineup, but with a no contract price of $149.99, it could be a good fit for consumers on the hunt for an affordable handset. The device's water resistance is a nice addition, and even though it's kind of a bummer that the Reef is 3G-only, that should at least help to prolong its battery life.
