Following Sprint's recent agreement with Transit Wireless to bring service to New York City subway stations, Verizon has announced that it's forged a similar partnership. The big red carrier revealed today that it has struck a deal with Transit Wireless to bring its 3G and 4G LTE service in subway stations that are sprinkled throughout NYC.

Verizon says that it'll begin to install its equipment in Transit's base stations in the coming weeks and that Verizon customers should begin to see service in 36 midtown Manhattan and Chelsea stations later this year. Looking ahead, Verizon plans to participate in phase two of the Transit project that will see 40 new stations come online, including Grand Central Station and several more stops throughout Queens. This phase is expected to reach completion in early 2014.

Smartphone adoption in the U.S. has been on the rise for quite a while now, and some folks can get addicted to all of the games, apps and other features that the devices have. That's why I'm sure that many folks get frustrated when they lose cell service in a subway station. That problem will be a thing of the past for Verizon customers that happen to frequent one of these cellular-enabled stations, though, something that I'm sure that NYC-based Verizon subscribers are pretty pleased about.
