It's a new month, which means that it's also time for a fresh set of Android distribution numbers! Google recently released its latest Android platform version stats, which reveal the different versions of Android that consumers have used to access the Google Play Store during a two-week period.
Android 4.1-4.3 Jelly Bean is once again at the top of the dessert heap, appearing on a total of 40.5 percent of devices during the survey period. Breaking that number down, Google says that 34 percent of users were on Android 4.1, while just 6.5 percent were using Android 4.2. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich tumbled a bit from last month, finishing at 22.5 percent, while Android 3.2 Honeycomb held strong at 0.1 percent.
Android 2.3 Gingerbread continued its hold on second place this month, dropping just 1 percent to finish with a share of 33.1 percent. Android 2.2 Froyo fell as well, moving from 3.1 percent last month to 2.5 percent in the most recent figures. Finally, Google says that Android 2.1 Eclair slipped to 1.2 percent, while Android 1.6 Donut held on to its 0.1 percent sliver of a share.
There's nothing terribly shocking in these latest Android distribution stats, as consumers on older hardware either upgrade to newer, Jelly Bean-equipped models or receive upgrades for their current devices. Expect Jelly Bean to continue to grow in the coming months, especially with the recent release of the Android 4.3-powered Nexus 7. Even though both Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich hold significant chunks of the Android pie, it's good to see that they're at least steadily losing users to the much newer Jelly Bean software.
