When a piece of mobile hardware starts getting near its first birthday, that typically means that its replacement is getting near as well. Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablets will be turning one year old in a little over a month, and according to a new rumor, Amazon is following the circle of mobile life by prepping some new Kindle Fire HDs that will launch in the near future.
A new report from BGR claims to have details on two new Kindle Fire HD tablets that are due to be released this fall. The site's "multiple trusted sources" claim that the 7-inch model will sport a display resolution of 1920x1200, up from the original's 1280x800 screen, adding that prototype models are sporting quad-core Snapdragon 800 processors. The 7-inch Kindle Fire HD's purported spec list is rounded out with 2GB RAM, 16GB/32GB/64GB storage, a front-facing camera, Wi-Fi and optional cellular connectivity. It's also said that the new tablet is running Android 4.2.2 beneath Amazon's custom UI.
Moving on to the bigger Kindle Fire HD, the 8.9-inch sibling allegedly features a 2560x1600 display, which is up from the 1920x1200 screen found on the current model. In addition to the Snapdragon 800 chip, 2GB RAM, storage options and other features found on the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD, the new 8.9-inch unit is also said to include an 8-megapixel rear camera.
The design of the Kindle Fire HD tablets is also reportedly getting tweaked a bit. The units are said to have thinner bezels and bodies that are lighter. In addition to these upgraded Kindle Fire HD tablets, it's said that Amazon is also planning to offer a refreshed version of its base Kindle Fire tablet.
As far as pricing and availability goes, today's report claims that Amazon is aiming to release its new Kindle Fires sometime during the fall, possibly in late September. Pricing is said to still be up in the air, but Amazon is reportedly working to keep its prices unchanged from the current models. The base Kindle Fire is currently sold for $159, while the 7-inch Kindle Fire HD is $199 and the 8.9-inch model is $269.
Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets seem to be some of the more popular Android-powered slates on the market, and so it wouldn't be a surprise to see the company unveil some upgraded models later this year. Whether or not they'll sport the features named in today's report remains to be seen, but taking into consideration other Android tablets that've debuted lately, upgrades like improved displays and 2GB RAM would make sense.
