Usually when we see the name MediaTek, it's associated with the processors that power mobile devices like the Acer Iconia A1 or the Lenovo IdeaTab A2107. Mobile processors aren't the only think that MediaTek is capable of cranking out, though, as the company recently took the wraps off of its new 3G Triple-SIM smartphone technology.
As you might've guessed, MediaTek's 3G Triple-SIM solution enables smartphones to use three different SIM cards at once. Each card is capable of doing what you'd expect a phone to do, like making calls and sending data, and MediaTek claims that all three SIMs can remain in standby mode without sucking down an excessive amount of battery power. MediaTek also claims that its 3G Triple-SIM tech has a high level of stability that results in fewer dropped calls.
Besides enabling the use of a trio of SIM cards in a single device, MediaTek's 3G Triple-SIM solution features a built-in UI that allows consumers to tweak or completely turn off the multi-SIM functionality. The inclusion of a this UI helps to make it easier for manufacturers to integrate the 3G Triple-SIM tech into their products.
Multi-SIM products are pretty rare in the U.S., but the devices are popular in international markets, allowing consumers to utilize more than one network and rate plan with just a single piece of hardware. This new 3G Triple-SIM tech will give users several different connectivity options at once, and while toting around a smartphone with three SIM cards in it may sound a bit crazy, I'm betting that there are some ultra-connected folks out there that'll jump at the chance to buy one. The first commercial product to support 3G Triple-SIM smartphone tech, the LG Optimus L4II, is being sold in Brazil.
