Just a week after Google treated Android users to a revamped Maps application, the company is giving iOS folk the same treatment. 9to5Mac notes that version 2.0 of Google Maps for iOS has begun rolling out in the App Store, bringing with it features like incident information and the Explore tab found in the aforementioned Android update. Also included is indoor mapping functionality for places like airports and malls, live traffic updates, and proper support for the iPad and iPad mini.
The Android and iOS versions of Google Maps have been a little different since the app hit Apple's hardware last year, with the iOS version packing a newer look while the Android version had some features that were unavailable to the iOS crowd. These recent updates bring the two apps much closer to feature parity, though, including an updated look that's in line with the new web version of Maps and full-on tablet support. That's exciting news for fans of both mobile OSes, and because the updates are rolling out close to one another, cartography lovers on both Android and iOS can share in the excitement that is a new Google Maps app.
The Google Maps version 2.0 update is currently making its way around the globe, with select countries in Asia being the first ones to gain access to the refreshed app. The update isn't live in the U.S. quite yet, nor is the app itself available in the App Store, but some folks claim to have successfully downloaded the update early by deleting their installed app and then redownloading it from iCloud. Once the Maps 2.0 update officially makes its way stateside, I'll be sure to give you a shout.
