Google announced earlier today that there have been 48 billion apps downloaded from its Play Store to date, and now Apple has crossed an app milestone of its own. The company just revealed that the iOS App Store has officially served up 50 billion app downloads. There's no word yet on which app was download number 50 billion or who downloaded it, but whoever did will receive a $10,000 iTunes gift card. Apple will also be handing out $500 iTunes gift cards to the people that downloaded the 50 apps immediately following number 50 billion.
Apple's App Store originally launched in 2008, giving iOS (then iPhone OS) users the opportunity to download official apps for their devices for the first time. The Cupertino firm said back in January 2013 that the App Store had served up 40 billion downloads to date, meaning that it took around four months for the storefront to push out another 10 billion downloads.
