We haven't heard much about the Windows Phone-powered Huawei W1 since its debut at CES in early January, but that changed today with the announcement that the W1 will finally be making its way stateside in the near future. Huawei revealed this morning that the W1 will be sold through Walmart's website and in select Walmart stores starting later this month. There's no word yet on exactly how much the W1 will cost when it lands on Walmart's shelves, but Huawei EVP Michael Chuang promises that the phone will be "competitively priced with an unlimited 30-day no-contract plan."
As far as specs go, the Huawei W1 features a 4-inch 800x480 touchscreen and VGA camera on its face, as well as a 5-megapixel shooter on its rear. Inside the W1's 10.4mm-thick frame is a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage (1.7GB user-accessible), microSD card slot and a 1,930mAh battery that Huawei says will last for 320 hours in standby mode.
The Huawei W1 looks to be a fairly entry-level Windows Phone 8 device thanks to its 800x480 screen resolution and half a gig of RAM. So long as the W1 is priced competitively like Huawei exec Michael Chuang says it will be, though, it could be an option for consumers looking for an affordable entry into the Windows Phone ecosystem. With a launch slated for sometime this month, we shouldn't have to wait much longer for Huawei and Walmart to reveal the W1's price tag, so keep it locked to PhoneDog and we'll update you with more information as we get it.
