Ready for another helping of quarterly results fun? That's precisely what we're getting, as Apple just released the report on its second quarter fiscal 2013 numbers. During Q2 2013, the Cupertino firm says that it moved 37.4 million iPhones and and 19.5 million iPads, both of which are up from the 35.1 million iPhones and 11.8 million iPads that it sold in Q2 2012. Finally, Apple reports that it sold just under 4 million Macs during the quarter, which is a drop from the 4 million that it sold in the year-ago quarter.
On the financial side of things, Apple pulled in a revenue of $43.6 billion for the quarter and a quarterly net profit of $9.5 billion. That's a mixed bag compared to Q2 2012, which saw Apple earn revenue of $39.2 billion and a profit of $11.6 billion.
Looking ahead, Apple CEO Tim Cook teased that his company is "hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software and services," adding that they're all excited about what's in the pipeline. No other details were mentioned, though that shouldn't really come as a surprise to anyone. Apple is holding a conference call to discuss its Q2 2013 earnings at 4 p.m. ET, so if Tim Cook or anyone else has anything interesting to add to these numbers, you can bet that we'll fill you in. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer revealed that the "overwhelming majority" of iPad mini buyers are first-time iPad customers. Later in the call, Apple CEO Tim Cook once again teased Apple's upcoming product plans, saying that the company has "really great stuff coming in the fall and across 2014."
Getting back to the raw stats, Oppenheimer reports that iOS is home to over 850,000 apps, including 350,000 iPad apps. Apple's CFO went on to say that iCloud is being used by 300 million people every day and teased that his company has "new features and capabilities in the pipeline."
In response to a question about smartphones with 5-inch displays, Tim Cook said that he believes that the iPhone 5 "has the absolute best display in the industry." He went on to say that Apple's competition has made tradeoffs to ship products with larger screens and that Apple won't ship its own larger display while those tradeoffs still exist.
