Sony Mobile has decided to kick the week off in a big way this morning, announcing two new additions to its Xperia lineup. First up is the Xperia SP, a handset that we got wind of last month. On the face of the Xperia SP is a 4.6-inch 1280x720 Reality Display and a VGA front-facing camera, and around back is an 8-megapixel shooter with an Exmor RS image sensor. Sandwiched in-between those features is a 1.7GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, NFC, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage (5.8GB user-accessible), microSD slot and support for LTE bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20. Oh, and see that little bar at the bottom of the Xperia SP? That's a transparent element that can change colors to notify users of incoming calls and messages.

Stepping down a bit brings us to the more entry-level Xperia L. This unit features a 4.3-inch 854x480 and VGA camera on its face, and flipping around to the back reveals a curved backside like some older Xperia models like the Xperia TL as well as an 8-megapixel Exmor RS camera and physical camera key, both of which Sony says help to offer "the perfect smartphone camera experience." Running the show that is the Xperia L is a 1GHz dual-core MSM8230 processor. Rounding the the spec list, we've got 8GB storage (5.8GHz user-accessible), microSD slot, 1GB RAM and NFC.

The Xperia SP and Xperia L will be available worldwide starting in Q2, with both units rolling out with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean preinstalled. Sony expects to offer the two devices in white, black and red varieties. Both of the two devices look like respectable additions to Sony's Xperia portfolio, with the SP offering noteworthy features like a 720p display and LTE connectivity along with 4G LTE support, while the L sounds like it could be a good option for folks that want an affordable smartphone with a focus on camera functionality.
