Time for the February Android distribution update! Google just posted some fresh statistics on its Android Developers site, and once again Android 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean has shown some growth. Both versions combined for a total of 13.6 percent, a figure that's up from 10.2 percent in January and 6.7 percent in December 2012. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich actually dropped a smidge from last month, going from 29.1 percent in January to 29 percent in February, but it's still the solid number two in the Great Android Dessert Race.
Next in the line of Android versions is 3.1/3.2 Honeycomb, aka the tablet-specific flavor. Honeycomb finished the measurement period at 1.3 percent, a drop of 0.2 percent from a month ago. Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still the king of the green robot hill, claiming a share of 45.6 percent of all Android devices that accessed Google Play during the two-week period ending on Feb. 4. That's actually a 2 percent drop from January, though. Rounding out this list is Android 2.2 Froyo at 8.8 percent, Android 2.1 Eclair at 2.2 percent and Android 1.6 Cupcake at a measly 0.2 percent.
Considering how old Gingerbread is getting, it's good to see that version of Google's mobile operating system continue to lose its share of the Android market to newer versions like Jelly Bean. We've seen a handful of updates begin going out over the past month or so that likely contributed to Jelly Bean's growth, including the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 and 10.1, Galaxy Note 10.1 and the OTA for AT&T's Galaxy S III. We'll likely continue to see trends like the figures that Google releases over the coming months, as consumers keep ditching their aging Gingerbread phones and manufacturers continue to update their newer products to Android 4.1/4.2 Jelly Bean.
