Just a week after Sony officially took the wraps off of the Xperia Z, a new rumor has claimed that a tablet with a similar moniker is also in the works. According to the Twitter account @Xperia_info, Sony is prepping a new slate dubbed the Xperia Tablet Z with a 10.1-inch 1920x1200 display and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. A 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon S4 Pro processor is reportedly buried inside the Tablet Z's 6.9mm thick body, along with 2GB RAM, 32GB storage, LTE and a 6,000mAh battery. We're also told to expect 8-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel cameras as well as a body that is water and dust resistant.
A couple more details about the device have been shared by Xperia Blog, which says that the Xperia Tablet Z is codenamed "Pollux" and that the SO-03E model described by @Xperia_info is destined for Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo. A different version with the model number C690X is reportedly in the works for western part of the world.
The most recent tablet released by Sony is the Xperia Tablet S, which debuted in August 2012 and features a name similar to the Xperia S smartphone that also arrived in 2012. With the new year and the impending arrival of the Xperia Z smartphone, Sony may feel like it's a good time to introduce a new tablet as well, especially with the new design that it's included with its new Xperia Z handset. There's no word yet on when the Xperia Tablet Z might be introduced, but a debut at Mobile World Congress at the end fo February could certainly be an option. We'll keep an eye out for more details and pass along anything that comes up.
