Corning's Gorilla Glass is used in a number of mobile products to help protect against scratches and other dings, and today the company teased the third version of Gorilla Glass. Set for a full debut at CES 2013 next week, Corning says that Gorilla Glass 3 has three times the scratch protection over its predecessors as well as a 40 percent reduction in visible scratches and a 50 percent increase glass's retained strength after a flaw occurs. All of this is thanks to a new feature dubbed "Native Damage Resistance," which is one of the tweaks that Corning has made to its formula.
While it's not yet clear exactly when we'll start seeing Gorilla Glass 3 appear in new products, Corning does promise that it's planning to announce full product details on Monday, Jan. 7. No matter how careful people are with their phones and tablets, many people still end up dinging up their devices by dropping them or putting them in a pocket with keys. Gorilla Glass can help to protect expensive gadgets during incidents like that, and it'll be interesting to see the improved Gorilla Glass 3 in action next week.
