Just a little under a year after Huawei introduced us to its Ascend D1 smartphone, it looks like that device's successor is nearing a debut of its own. Some images have been posted by Chinese site ITHome showing the Huawei Ascend D2 in the wild, complete with a white paint job and on-screen navigation buttons. We can see in the shots that the phone's headphone jack is on the bottom of the device, up top there appears to be a power/lock button and a micro-USB port, and there are cameras on the front and rear of the phone.
When it comes to actual specs, the Ascend D2 reportedly features a 5-inch 1080p display, not unlike the flagship Android handsets from several other companies. There's also said to be a 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 13-megapixel rear and 1.9-megapixel front cameras, 2GB RAM and a 3,000mAh battery. Android 4.1 Jelly Bean will be preloaded on the D2.
The original Ascend D1 features a 4.5-inch 720p display and dual-core processor, which are still respectable features as 2012 is coming to a close. We're starting to see many high-end Android handsets come to market with 1080p displays and quad-core chips, though, and the Ascend D2 looks like Huawei's addition to that trend. There's no word yet on when we might see this thing launch or if it'll make it's way to the U.S., but Huawei SVP Richard Yu recently revealed on Sina Weibo that the D2 is due for an unveiling at CES next month, so it won't be long before more details are revealed.
